Between the 24th of November and the 1st of December 2024, our member Stefania Recalcati, and Massimo Locati, director of the Department of Medical Biotechnology and Translational Medicine, visited the Catholic University of Mozambique (UCM).
The visit is part of Erasmus-KA171-Global Health project, a three year project in partnership with Doctors with Africa CUAMM, which aims to provide teachers and students with skills to improve their global health mindset through international mobility.
During the mission, professors Recalcati and Locati had lectures with the students of the first years of medical school.
UCM presented a project engaging medical students in outreach activities. After completing a preparatory course, each student “adopts” a vulnerable family and visits them periodically to to monitor their general health, hygiene conditions and vital signs, and reports any problems to the teachers in charge. This project, which has been running for several years, helps building trust between the communities and healthcare workers, and fosters the delivery of care to families facing economic hardships.
This has already generated great interest among UNIMI lecturers, as it could inspire similar programmes in Italy, in contexts of marginalisation, loneliness, or specific pathological problems related to the elders.
At the end of the visit, professors Recalcati and Locati with a UCM sudent planted a seedling as a sign of a growint partnership between the two universities.
