Visit to Gulu, Uganda

Between the 23rd and the 28th of June, Prof. Stefania Recalcati, MACH member and Rector’s Delegate for International Health Cooperation, traveled to Gulu in Nothern Uganda to meet representatives from the Faculty of Medicine of Gulu University and St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor.

The visit was part of a 3-year Erasmus+ project led by the University of Milan, which promotes the mobility of students and professors to and from the two Ugandan institutions with the objective of fostering professional development of participants through the exhange of learning and teaching skills.

The Faculty of Medicine at the University of Gulu prioritises the alignment of educational objectives, instruction and outcomes to meet social needs, empower communities and improve well-being. A key component of this approach focuses on community involvement, with students spending time at local health facilities to gain first-hand experience with the challenges and provisions of everyday health care.

St. Mary’s Hospital, the biggest not-for-profit healthcare provider in Uganda, is one of the facilities hosting medical students for their field experience. In addition to Ugandan students, the hospital also hosts international students from the University of Milan. Thanks to the partnership between the University of Milan and Fondazione Corti, medical residents and students of the Online Master in Global Health can carry out an internship in Uganda.

During the visit, Prof. Recalcati met some of the residents currently in Uganda and paved the way for further agreements between the University of Milan, Lacor Hospital and Fondazione Corti.
